Metalock Brasil performs crack repair on ship’s main engine in the United States

During a routine inspection, the crew of a container ship found a crack in the vessel’s main engine block, which runs the South America – Central America – North America route.

The crack reached 930 mm in length. It was located in the upper part of cylinder 7 of the Main Combustion Engine, on the receiving side of the exhaust air.

Metalock Brasil performed an onboard inspection and established a repair plan using its unique Lloyd’s Register approved and patented cold repair process.

This is a process that allows repairs to be carried out without the need to remove the ship from operation.

Because it was a complex repair and in a difficult to access location, inside the Engine Room, Metalock Brasil worked with three specialist technicians. It was necessary to dismantle several peripheral pipes, as well as the cylinder liner and the engine cylinder head, in order to work properly in the affected region.

The service was successfully completed between August 31st and September 3rd, 2023, in Port Hueneme, California (United States).
